Unikt marint djurliv. De hydrografiska förhållandena med ett komplicerat vattenutbyte med Skagerrak över mynningströskeln har bidragit till uppkomsten av ett rikt och delvis unikt marint djurliv. Gullmarn är en äkta tröskelfjord och dessutom Bohusläns största fjord. Naturreservatet omfattar hela vattenområdet och även stränderna som varierar allt mellan branta klippstup, strandängar, jordbruksmark och sandstränder.
